| May 19 - Clarkston, WA to The Dalles, OR - Today we
traveled through the dry, treeless hills of eastern Washington, stopping
at the L&C campsite of May 3, 2006, marked by this sign. At Maryhill
we had lunch and a great tour of their Native American collection,
including this Makah whaler's hat ok |

| While the focus of our trip is Lewis and Clark, we realize
that they are really part of a bigger story. They led the way, and in the
1840s and 50s, some 400,000 souls fulfilled their dream by walking across
the country on the Oregon Trail. We walked on a part of the trail at
Biggs, Oregon.

| Later we stopped at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center in
The Dalles, OR, where we preiewed their exhibit CARGO, which shows the
huge amount of "stuff" Lewis and Clark carried with them across the
country. This interpretive center does a great job of telling about the
natural world of the gorge, as well as the impact of man, from the Indians
to the modern dams.
