Aug. 10: Billings, MT to Helena, MT

Today's only interpretive stop was the Three Forks of the Missouri
River. The Madison and Jefferson come together first to form the
Missouri R. and the Gallatin joins about 1/2 mile downstream. |

Here,on July 28,Lewis and Clark named the three rivers which form the
Missouri: Gallatin for Secretary of the Treasury, Madison for Secretary
of State and "...the river we intend to take, for
that illustrious personage Thomas Jefferson, the author of our
enterprise." |
|

We walk over "Fort Rock", the hill that separates the newly formed
Missouri from the Gallatin River. |

We gather at the other end of the hill, under "Lewis's Rock"... |

...and walk down for lunch alongside the Gallatin River. |
|

Finally, we see the Gallatin River give tribute to the Missouri by two
mouths around a gravel delta. |
